New Positions with the Media Cloud Project

Media Cloud is pleased to announce two open positions that we are currently hiring for:

  • Data Collections Curator

Researcher/Community Manager

The Media Cloud project is looking for a Researcher/Community Manager to explore online extremism and online media coverage of other key issues related to Media Cloud and its associated International Hate Observatory Project (IHOP). Learn more at https://bit.ly/3k9xT1Y.

This position will be based in the School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The Researcher/Community Manager will develop a deep understanding of the Media Cloud-IHOP (mediacloud.org) tools and data to communicate with and educate the external Media Cloud user community on research applications of the tools. The Researcher/Community Manager will work with collaborators and partner organizations on specific research projects, and use those experiences to help inform further development of IHOP, and the underlying Media Cloud tools. This is a grant funded 2-year fully remote position at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Essential Functions

  • Use the Media Cloud tool suite to explore online extremism and online media coverage of other key issues related to Media Cloud and IHOP.

  • Use the Media Cloud tool suite to help collaborators and partner organization, including IHOP partner foundations, their grantees, and members of social change organizations conduct research on digital media ecosystems, extremism and hate speech, and connect to a broader international community of scholars and researchers.

  • Closely collaborate with project staff at Northeastern University and Media Ecosystems Analysis Group, and with researchers and developers on the Media Cloud team at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society to advance project goals.

  • Produce original research into online extremism and other topics using Media Cloud tools and publish the results in cooperation with the Media Cloud team and partner organizations.

  • Manage communications between the UMass team and multiple external partner organizations.

  • Construct and maintain search queries on various IHOP topics using Media Cloud tools.

  • Clearly and concisely communicate research discoveries to partners and partner needs back to the Media Cloud research and development teams.

  • Develop and produce reports and multimedia training materials for partners and sponsor organizations.

  • Represent the needs of end users, participate in design discussions and help prioritize IHOP related improvements to the Media Cloud tools.

  • Report to Media Cloud team on important trends in topic areas (such as online extremist speech) critical to partner organizations.

  • Help with Media Cloud-IHOP outreach efforts by running training sessions, workshops and supporting events.  

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree and 1 year of research experience, or Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of research experience.

  • Experience and/or interest in social change topics, particularly in the field of online extremism, journalism and news, public health, and/or women’s rights.

  • Advance knowledge of web-based research tools and technologies.

  • Experience with creative uses of web-based research tools and technologies.

  • Ability to quickly gain proficiency in the use of the Media Cloud tool suite.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Ability to consider issues from multiple perspectives and provide creative problem solving.

  • Able to work with strong initiative, independence and collaboration as part of a remote team.

  • Excellent group facilitation skills.

  • Excellent ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Data Collections Curator

The Media Cloud project is looking for a Data Collections Curator to identify new sources and types of content for the Media Cloud data repository and to explore online extremism with the research and technology team as part of the International Hate Observatory Project (IHOP). Based in the School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the Data Collections  Curator will develop a deep understanding of Media Cloud (mediacloud.org) and its data collection process, become familiar with the different Media Cloud collections, and work to assure the quality of the collections and stored data. The Curator will proactively identify new sources and types of content to include in the Media Cloud data repository, partner with the research and technology team in these efforts, and channel the expertise of users and collaborators to aid in these processes. This is a grant funded 2-year fully remote position at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Essential Functions

  • Expand data ingestion and create new collections of news sources for Media Cloud-IHOP, a set of online tools for researching and studying digital media ecosystems, media coverage and online extremism.

  • Monitor, clean, update and improve existing data collections and lists of media sources that Media Cloud-IHOP uses to conduct research. Assure the overall completeness and quality of data.

  • Closely collaborate with project staff at Northeastern University and Media Ecosystems Analysis Group, and with researchers and developers on the Media Cloud team at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society to advance project goals.

  • Work with the technical team to improve data discovery and ingestion tools.

  • Improve the presentation of media collections to users.

  • Collaborate with partners and volunteers to create new media collections and expand existing collections.

  • Review users’ suggestions for inclusion of sources into the Media Cloud-IHOP database.

  • Conduct audits to assess data quality in the system and in research outputs.

  • Assist in the identification of additional sources and data from different media platforms.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in library or information science, business, journalism, or other social science and one year of relevant experience.

  • Ability to quickly analyze quality of data sources.

  • Acute attention to detail.

  • Experience and/or interest in digital tools and research.

  • Experience with archiving, indexing, or other data preservation projects.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Excellent trouble shooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to work independently as part of a team with flexibility and initiative.

  • Strong group facilitation skills.

  • Ability to work on both technical and research issues.

  • Understanding of the process of data ingestion and cleaning.

  • Ability to learn basic programming as required, and understand software development processes.

  • Ability to coordinate with software development teams remotely.
